Fireplace – 19637

A large antique 19th century Renaissance revival marble fireplace surround

An exceptional antique Renaissance style fireplace showcasing meticulous craftsmanship, intricate detailing and the dramatic interplay of three contrasting stones. The richly veined Rouge Royal marble surround is shaped with elegant upper corbels, a central keystone and substantial projecting plinths. Paired Carrara columns and pilasters frame the opening in pale tones with delicate veining, creating a striking contrast against the deep red surround. Capitals, bases and a broad moulded mantel shelf in Belgian Maxy black marble add depth, definition and architectural authority. Balanced proportions, sculptural mouldings and the distinctive combination of Rouge Royal, Carrara and Maxy black give this distinguished chimneypiece a timeless elegance and commanding presence in both period and contemporary interiors.

Provenance: Purchased from the ‘Earl of Crawford’ at Balcarres House in Fife.

Circa 1860
