A fine English Regency giltwood overmantel mirror, of rectangular form and retaining a wonderfully warm, aged gilt surface

The architectural frame is particularly decorative, with turned and carved side columns enriched with acanthus-leaf ornament, terminating in square floral-carved corner blocks. The upper frieze is divided into panels and applied with classical scrolling foliate decoration and flower-head motifs, while the rounded upper moulding is further embellished with carved leaf clasps.

The mirror is fitted with a large central plate flanked by narrower side plates, giving it the strong horizontal proportions characteristic of Regency overmantel mirrors. The distressed gilding, darkened recesses and aged mirror plates give the piece considerable character and an attractive untouched appearance.

English, Regency period, circa 1820.

A handsome and highly decorative period mirror, ideal above a fireplace or as a substantial statement piece in a traditional or contemporary interior.
