Wood and brocatella – W183
An antique George III period, carved and painted wooden mantlepiece with marble slips
The frame is made entirely in timber (not gesso), the carvings are well executed, with various foliage, leaf work and egg and dart mouldings. The plain frieze with proud centre plaque rests on a dog legged frame.
The richly coloured and imported Spanish Brocetella marble used to frame the opening, was a favourite choice for the Georgians of this period.
