White marble – 19545
A very good early 19th century Regency period neo-classical statuary marble chimneypiece
The jambs are sculpted from solid blocks of marble with each one featuring a thyrsus, (a long staff adorned with ivy and topped with a pinecone) this is associated with Dionysus, the Greek god of wine, fertility, and celebration, or his Roman equivalent called Bacchus. At the centre of the frieze is a pine cone set into foliage and with finely carved arabesques of laurels and flower heads to either side.
This superbly carved, pure white statuary marble fireplace was produced in Rome, Italy, in the English Regency style for the British market. Roman sculpture, including fireplaces, were frequently purchased or made to order on the Grand Tour and brought to the British isles.
