Column fireplace – 19618
A large scale and good quality, antique neo-classical white Statuary and coloured Portoro marble fireplace
With detached Portoro marble columns terminating in ionic capitals, beneath corner blockings carved with shield shaped cartouche. A pair of frieze panels with swags of husks upheld by ribbon bows, flank the highly carved centre tablet, which depicts ‘Mars Disarmed by Venus and the Three Graces’. The scene is set in a temple floating in the clouds and shows the god of war, Mars allowing himself to be disarmed by Venus, while Cupid and the three Graces play there part. This symbolizes peace and love triumphing over conflict.
The fireplace opening is framed by a thick moulding off egg and dart motif.
The break-fronted cornice shelf steps forward over the corners and is decorated with dentil mouldings.
