A beautifully carved reclaimed English Bath stone chimneypiece in the George III style
The profusely carved acanthus leaf arabesque frieze, entwined with grape vines and centred by a mask of Mercury .
Each jamb with sunken panels, two rams heads with an oval paterea in the centre.
Circa 1900
Mercury was the Roman god of commerce, eloquence, travellers, communication, messengers, and trickery.
In Greek mythology he was referred to as Hermes.
