Column fireplace – 19556
An English George III period white Statuary marble chimneypiece with coloured Devonian Ogwell marble elements
The white marble jambs with three quarter and engaged Ogwell marble columns, these are topped with scrolled ionic capitals.
The well carved centre plaque with arabesques of acanthus leaf’s is flanked by frieze panels and end-blocks of Ogwell marble, a break-fronted dentil cornice shelf rests on top.
Circa 1770
Ogwell marble was quarried near Newton Abbot, Devonshire, England during the 18th and 19th century’s. It was used for exterior and interior decoration, examples of its use in interior architecture can be seen in Oxford Museum of Natural History, Birmingham Art Gallery and Museum and St John’s College Chapel, Cambridge.
