Antique Mantel – 18186

A magnificent and rare antique Statuary and Sienna marble fireplace

The lower half with full rounded Sienna columns on Statuary pilasters and with highly carved capitals, each one different. The arched opening decorated with a trail of carved statuary marble oak leaves and acorns. Resting on the break-fronted shelf is a Sienna marble over-mantel overlaid with statuary marble carvings of intertwining ivy and berries, interrupted by four exquisitely carved and unique brackets. In the left top corner are the letters ‘AD’ and the right corner ‘1783’ the date of manufacture. The pearl beading which is inset into the Sienna frame is extremely fine and perfectly formed.

I believe the top section of the fireplace originally housed a painting but can be filled, using a mirror, or as intended, a painted panel or framed picture.

Made in the Gothic Revival style, an architectural movement which began during the late 1740’s.

Circa 1783
