Inlaid Gilt-wood Table – AF150 

A George III neo-classical giltwood side-table with statuary marble and scagliola top in the manner of ‘Pietro Bossi’

The giltwood table with square tapering and fluted legs joined by a fluted frieze with four oval paterae and a plain recessed centre panel.

Retaining the original semi-circular Statuario Carara marble top, which has a fine moulded edge and is inlaid with scagliola in the form of various neo-classical decoration, all comparable to other works of Pietro Bossi.

Both the giltwood base and marble top are in original condition but can be restored if preferred.

Pietro Bossi

Scagliola and stucco worker, active in Dublin in the last quarter of the eighteenth century. Pietro Bossi, who may have been a member of a family of stucco workers named Bossi in the neighbourhood of Como, Northern Italy, had arrived in Dublin by 1784. Best known for his inlaid marble mantelpieces and table tops.

The date and place of Pietro Bossi’s death is not known. He may have married in Ireland; the christening of Maria Teresa Bossi, daughter of Peter and Sarah Bossi of Fleet Street, Dublin, on 5 July 1795 is recorded in the registers of St Marks’ Church of Ireland church.
