A superb 18th century brass register grate, signed S & Jn Clarke, Dublin.

The brass surround and fire cheeks are engraved with neo-classical motifs. The basket has four blackened iron bars surmounted by urn finials, below the bars is a pierced and engraved brass apron.

The Clarke’s workshop is listed at address “Aston’s Quays Dublin”, they produced the finest fire grates in 18th century Ireland. Other examples of Clarke grates can be seen in Dublin Castle, Castletown Cox, Carton House and several houses in Merrion Square.
