Antique Fireplace – 18162
An outstanding and beautifully carved antique white statuary marble fireplace
The deep rectangular moulded shelf, rests on a frieze exquisitely carved with two pairs of cornucopias, centred by a classical scene depicting Aeneas, mythical hero of Troy and Rome. Each jamb has a full length caryatids, supporting end-blocks carved with very fine baskets of flowers.
This superbly carved, pure white statuary marble fireplace was produced in Rome, Italy, in the English Regency style for the British market. Roman sculpture, including fireplaces, were frequently purchased or made to order on the Grand Tour and brought to the British isles.
Circa 1820
An identical fireplace once stood in the dining room at 19 Grosvenor Square in Mayfair, London, demolished in 1933 (see additional images).
