An early 18th century English Frosterley marble fireplace

The fireplace consists of a moulded bolection frame resting on plain plinths, with a barrel shaped frieze and stepped cornice on top.

This attractive and unusual black marble, which contains a variety of white corals and shells, was quarried in Frosterley, Durham, England. Examples of the marble can be found in Durham Cathedral, York minster, Oxford university and the Anglican Cathedral in Mumbai, India.
