Wooden Mantel – W105

Magnificent Antique English oak mantelpiece of exceptional quality 

Large in scale and beautifully carved from oak in the Elizabethan Renaissance Revival style. A centre mirror is flanked by two exquisitely carved panels with the date of manufacture “1892”. Two caryatids, (male and female) support a break-fronted dental cornice.  The aperture is framed with a polished limestone bolection moulding centred by a keystone.

Provenance: Thorndon Hall, Essex 

 

Thorndon Hall is a very fine 18th century country house within Thorndon Park, Ingrave, Essex, England, approximately two miles south of Brentwood and 25 miles (40 km) from central London.

Formerly the country seat of the Petre family who now reside at nearby Ingatestone, the house is located within nearly 600 acres (240 ha) of ancient medieval deer park, meadows and forest. The garden is designed by Capability Brown.

Thorndon Hall is Grade I listed with English Heritage, and the park is Grade II*-listed.

This mantelpiece was removed from the house during the middle of the 20th century, before the building was developed into apartments.
